Post-Campaign Needs Assessment and Funding Priorities for the College of Education and Human Services
Pioneering new ideas. Innovative programs. Exacting best methods. The College of Education and Human Services at Central Michigan University is a leader on the state and national scene in the fields of teacher preparation, education administration, recreation, and human environmental studies. Its mission is to provide the highest quality undergraduate and graduate educational experiences that develop effective professionals, critical thinkers, and lifelong learners. Students will expand their understanding of themselves and their roles in a diverse and global society. Through a broad range of technological and human services, the College and its graduates, in collaboration with the constituencies they serve, will be proactive forces for improving the quality of life in the twenty-first century.
The College’s dynamic departments include:
Teacher Education and Professional Development: Teacher Education produces 700 new teachers each year, training them with the most effective, cutting-edge techniques. Educators are increasingly expected to be savvy users of new technologies, skilled collaborators, problem solvers, and outcome-oriented practitioners. They must be well prepared in their academic disciplines, exhibit best practices in teaching, and be equipped to accommodate a diverse student body. Teacher education develops students into effective professionals, critical thinkers, and lifelong learners.
Counseling and Special Education: The study of Counseling and Special Education provides students with a knowledge and understanding of individual differences, life span issues, and how to effectively work with others. The programs offered emphasize working with clients and students as individuals within a group setting and serving them throughout the life span. All programs provide experiential applications for students.
Educational Leadership: The Department of Educational Leadership offers a full range of graduate programs to prepare individuals for effective performance in roles as educational leaders in schools, communities, and institutions of higher education. Students develop on a continuum from scholar-practitioner to practitioner-scholar. Programs, scholarship, and service, infused with humanism and diversity, are based upon theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
Recreation, Parks, and Leisure Services: As the fourth largest program of its kind in the United States, Recreation, Parks and Leisure Services leads the way in preparing professionals for Michigan’s fastest growing industry - hospitality. Students are trained to help others to utilize leisure time intelligently. As recreation and park administration personnel, they contribute immeasurably to an improved quality of life for others through creative and well-planned use of leisure time.
Human Environmental Studies: The Department of Human Environmental Studies provides leadership in areas that directly affect children, families, individuals and groups within their increasingly complex social, psychological, economic, designed, and cultural environments. Departmental programs emphasize the building of collaborative partnerships with a wide range of local and national constituents to engage students in meaningful and relevant interaction and encourage the generation of new knowledge through research. Graduates enjoy opportunities in a variety of careers in early childhood services, family therapy, dietetics, health care, food science, retail management, product development, apparel design, interior design, and research.
Professional Outreach: Rich with outreach centers, the College guides its students, Michigan educators, and industry professionals, in personal, scholastic and professional endeavors. The College provides superior opportunities, such as:
- Science/Math/Technology Center: This Center serves the students, teachers, and administrators of the Gratiot-Isabella RESD and the Clare-Gladwin RESD, as well as the students and faculty of CMU. The Center provides professional development to 14 school districts in this rural four-county area.
- Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS): The Central Michigan GEMS Education Center is dedicated to the improvement of math, science, technology, and environmental education in K-16 teaching and learning. GEMS is an exemplary curriculum developed by the Lawrence Hall of Science. The GEMS Center provides training for both pre-service teachers, as well as in-service teachers from school districts throughout the State.
- Human Growth and Development Laboratory (HGDL): Students work with, observe and conduct important studies through this lab school, which enrolls over 100 pre-school children through its tuition-based and Head Start programs. The HGDL offers students engaged in family studies and child development the opportunity to examine the growth and progression of children in their social contexts.
- Michigan Schools in the Middle: MISM provides pre-service and in-service middle level teacher preparation and professional development support for teachers and other middle level education stakeholders so that developmentally responsive, academically excellent, and socially equitable middle level schools will be available to meet the needs of young adolescents in Michigan.
- Center for Leisure Services - The Center for Leisure Services works with recreation students to secure their internship, fieldwork, and practicum experiences, assisting with placement, counseling, and supervision. Staff coordinate student experiences in a variety of settings within Michigan and nationally, including municipal and county recreation departments, hospital and clinical programs, camps and outdoor education centers, commercial facilities, and resorts.
-
Instructional Materials Center – This center provides interested individuals with access to a unique collection of teaching materials used by preschool through twelfth grade teachers. The IMC houses commercially produced items like CD’s, kits, periodicals, microcomputer software, games, and a collection of books.
