Our bold new vision

Recipients of the John E. Warriner Scholarship:

“My dream is to publish both scholarly books and books of poetry and teach at the university level. Being awarded the John E. Warriner Scholarship allowed me to cut back on my work hours and devote more time to my classes and accomplishing my dream.”

Gina Myers

“I cannot describe the excitement I felt when I read my congratulatory letter about the John E. Warriner Scholarship. Truly, if there was one award I have always hoped to win, it is the one sharing the Warriner family name.”

Kristopher K. Gies

Central Michigan University’s vigorous and innovative community of scholars, students, and partners shares unparalleled enthusiasm and determination to realize A New Vision of Excellence during the first comprehensive capital campaign in CMU history.

This multimillion dollar campaign will provide important benefits to CMU students, faculty, alumni, and many others at this definitive juncture in CMU’s development as a teaching and research institution.

The $3.5 million venture for the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences will strengthen CMU’s already strong humanities and human sciences programs while advancing vital broader campaign initiatives to:
  • Establish student scholarships and heighten academic standards
  • Provide endowments for faculty research and creativity
  • Enhance the campus environment with advanced facilities and technology
  • Strengthen ongoing and special programs

Your generous support in any of these areas – student awards, applied faculty engagement, or modern learning resources – will ensure that CMU’s New Vision of Excellence extends far into the future.

The campaign for the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences

The Campaign for Central Michigan University presents opportunities throughout the university, including initiatives to realize the immense potential in CMU’s College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences.

CMU will develop new scholarships for humanities and social and behavioral sciences students, increase endowments for faculty research and professorships, and equip college facilities and resources.

Join us as we, together, fulfill A New Vision of Excellence for the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Our target goal  $3.5 million
Student scholarships and enrichment $1 million
Faculty and program endowment $1 million
Enrichment opportunities and ongoing special programs $1 million
Enhanced campus environment  $500,000

Student Scholarships and Enrichment – $1 million

The College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences has made it a top priority to become more competitive in recruiting and providing support for top students from Michigan and elsewhere. By expanding the college’s undergraduate and graduate scholarship programs, more students will have access to a CMU education and will bring their energy and leadership to our campus.

Endowments are particularly attractive forms of support because they provide long-term resources to consistently award competitive scholarships to deserving students in the fields of humanities and social and behavioral sciences.

Donors who designate gifts for graduate fellowships enable students to study and conduct research in fields such as English, foreign languages, history, military science, philosophy, religion, political science, psychology, sociology, anthropology, and social work. The university must compete for these talented students with many other universities that provide funding for these programs.

Donors also can support study abroad programs and scholarships at both undergraduate and graduate levels.

Faculty and Program Endowment - $1 million

The college’s success rests largely on the strengths of its faculty, whose teaching helps define the undergraduate and graduate experience and whose research fosters student learning and contributes to the betterment of society. CMU’s future depends on the ability to continue to attract, support, and retain talented professors whose teaching abilities and scholarship make them leaders in the classroom and in their fields. Providing exceptional faculty members offers students more opportunities for a rigorous education.

Endowed chairs provide a mechanism to attract the best faculty to CMU. These distinguished professors provide exceptional learning opportunities for our students, conduct world-class research and creative activities, and also serve as role models for our students and faculty. Donors can make lasting contributions by supporting the already established Griffin Endowed Chair in American Government or by establishing other endowed chairs.

Enrichment opportunities and ongoing special programs – $1 million

Endowed enrichment opportunities

Guest speakers, educational trips, student research, and creative and scholarly programs within departments all are examples of enrichment opportunities that will enhance the educational experiences of our students. Donors interested in establishing endowments to support such programs will provide students with educational opportunities that otherwise might not be possible.

Ongoing and special programs

Annual giving of both restricted and unrestricted dollars supports innovation in programming and gives the college flexibility to respond to the emerging needs of its students and faculty. Annual giving dollars can leverage other gifts by serving as matching gifts for the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences.

To ensure that the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences attracts and retains the best scholars available, particularly as CMU’s programs become more research-intensive, we must have the resources to support faculty research and publication. Student research opportunities also are extremely important. Annual gifts provide opportunities to support our faculty in some of their efforts while at the same time enabling our students to work with faculty on research and creative projects.

Enhanced Campus Environment - $500,000

The new Health Professions Building has enhanced the college’s vision to develop new interdisciplinary health-related programs in the health care field. The new facility houses the newly created neuroscience major and the Psychological Training and Consultation Center. This center serves as a teaching and research clinic for delivery of various community-based psychological programs and services.

The college is seeking philanthropic support to outfit the neuroscience laboratories, classrooms, and Psychology Clinic with the latest technology used in educational instruction and research.

The College Of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences: Our case for support

The College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences is the largest of six academic colleges at Central Michigan University and is home to eight academic departments.

  • English Language and Literature
  • Foreign Languages, Literatures, and Cultures
  • History
  • Military Science
  • Philosophy and Religion
  • Political Science
  • Psychology
  • Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work

The college provides a significant part of the liberal arts education, which is an inherent element of the educational experiences of all CMU undergraduate students. A liberal arts education helps students develop an invaluable set of employable skills, including the ability to think clearly and critically, to become effective communicators, to see issues from multiple perspectives, and to engage in lifelong learning in both formal and informal settings.

With more than 250 faculty members, the college encourages disciplined inquiry into ideas that grow through human experiences. The college fosters the development of values pertaining to character and citizenship, including concern for the welfare of humanity, dedication to public service, and awareness of the social issues confronting an increasingly diverse society. Distinguishing CHSBS features include:

Scholarship and excellence in teaching. Notable faculty members are a hallmark of the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences. They include nationally known authors and playwrights, active public policy makers, recognized anthropologists and historians, and award-winning psychologists. Along with their scholarly productivity, faculty excel in providing outstanding learning opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Strong academic programs that prepare students for careers and good citizenship. CHSBS offers 34 majors and 38 minors, 14 master’s degree programs, a specialist’s degree program, and five doctoral programs. The highly acclaimed Department of Psychology offers four separate doctoral programs that are accredited by the American Psychological Association. The school psychology graduate programs also are accredited by the National Association of Programs of School Psychologists. The Department of History offers innovative collaborative master’s and doctoral programs with the University of Strathclyde in Scotland.

International opportunities. The college offers many international opportunities for its students, including study abroad, living in the Foreign Language Residential College, and being taught by visiting international faculty members. The Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures, and Cultures supports international study with departmental and endowed scholarships in French, German, and Spanish, and also collaborates with other departments to offer a progressive new interdisciplinary major in European studies.

Innovative interdisciplinary programs. CHSBS is the home of several interdisciplinary majors, including programs in woman’s studies, European studies, cognitive science, and neuroscience. The neuroscience program, for example, includes course work across the disciplines of psychology, biology, chemistry, and health professions, and includes opportunities for students to work with faculty members on cutting-edge research.
