The
Campaign for Off-Campus Programs
Our
bold new vision
Central Michigan University’s vigorous and innovative community of scholars, students, and partners shares unparalleled enthusiasm and determination to realize A New Vision of Excellence during the first comprehensive capital campaign in CMU history.
This multimillion dollar campaign will provide important benefits to CMU students, faculty, alumni, and many others at this definitive juncture in CMU’s development as a teaching and research institution.
The $1.5 million venture for Off-Campus Programs will strengthen CMU’s already exceptional extended learning programs while advancing vital broader campaign initiatives to:
-
Establish student scholarships and heighten academic standards
-
Provide
endowments for faculty research and creativity
-
Enhance the campus environment with advanced facilities and
technology
-
Strengthen ongoing and special programs
Your generous support in any of these areas – student awards, applied faculty engagement, or modern learning resources – will ensure that CMU’s New Vision of Excellence extends far into the future.
The
campaign for Off-Campus Programs
The Campaign for Central Michigan University presents opportunities throughout the university, including initiatives to actualize the immense potential in CMU’s innovative
Off-Campus Programs.
Off-Campus Programs will heighten academic expectations, promote faculty development, expand distance and extended learning outreach, and provide ongoing program support.

Student
Scholarships - $750,000
Financial aid is often the difference between a student attending a university and not attending. Nearly 2,200
students enrolled in Off-Campus Programs receive financial
aid. Scholarships are an important resource for many working adults.
CMU and Off-Campus Programs seek to become more competitive in recruiting and providing support for students throughout the country. Currently, the college maintains three scholarship programs:
•
Scholarship
Endowment for Off-Campus
Students. Established in 2001 by alumni and friends of
Off-Campus Programs, this scholarship endowment awards financial
assistance to selected students who maintain 3.0 grade point averages.
•
Bernard
Landuyt. This scholarship fund was created with the support of Metro Detroit staff and faculty. Annual awards are available to
Off-Campus Program students in the Detroit area.
•
William
Gemma. Established in the name of a popular CMU faculty member, this scholarship is for graduate students pursuing degrees in health services, international, or public administration.
Expanding Off-Campus Program's scholarship programs will give more students access to a CMU education. In the future,
Off-Campus Programs hope to have programs for international, geographic-specific, program-specific, and undergraduate student scholarships.
Off-Campus
Library Services - $250,000
Graduates and current students alike consistently cite Off-Campus Library Services as the No. 1 service offered by the
Off-Campus Programs. OCLS accommodates extended learning students’ demanding schedules by providing free in-depth reference and referral services that save hours of research time for busy adults. Materials are delivered electronically or mailed to students free of charge at their home or office. OCLS continues to increase access to online documents, to add research resources, and to develop ways for students to connect with library resources – such as the new online chat service that allows students to talk online with a librarian.
OCLS is internationally recognized for its leadership in supporting distance learning programs. OCLS sponsors a biannual conference attended by librarians and extended learning professionals from around the world.
The three-year renovation of the Charles V. Park Library on campus gave OCLS improved facilities that have helped provide enhanced and updated services to off-campus students. Funds for the OCLS will augment the library collection, librarian resources, and infrastructure.
Ongoing
and Special Programs - $500,000
Annual donations support programming innovation and flexibility to respond to the emerging needs of students, faculty, and the community. New projects, innovative course delivery, facilities upkeep, equipment purchases, and staff resources are made possible by this added support.
Opportunities on the horizon include a joint effort by Off-Campus
Programs and CMU’s Public Broadcasting network to enhance courses and provide additional educational programming. Added funding will be needed to enable faculty and staff to maximize opportunities of digital multicasting and online delivery capabilities.
As the success of Off-Campus Programs rests largely with the quality of its faculty, funds will support faculty development. Nearly 1,400 instructors are approved to teach
Off-Campus Program courses, with the majority holding terminal degrees (Ph.D. or Ed.D.). Almost half are currently working in business, government, or industry, and 29 percent are from other colleges and universities. Financial support enables instructors to develop the most effective teaching methods and to create current educational materials for courses.
Off-Campus Programs and CMU Libraries are currently developing a significant breakthrough in the course development process with the Media Farm project. Images and text can be stored online and retrieved so that material that applies to multiple courses doesn’t need to be reinvented each time. It is expected that the Media Farm project will be modeled by other universities and educational institutions upon its completion.
Funds also will support the Educational Materials Center (EMC), which is a division of the
Off-Campus Programs. EMC provides and produces educational booklets, posters, videos, and learning kits for children from toddler age through high school on a number of topics such as antidrug, reading tools, health information, and many other educational subjects. Donors to these projects will help reach out to 96 percent of the students in Michigan and to a large school-aged population in 29 states throughout the U.S.
Technology helps to bring education to populations traditionally challenged by time constraints and geographic barriers. It is important to use funds to continue to increase the reach of
Off-Campus Programs through online courses, televised sessions, teleconferencing, and Web-based conferencing.
In addition, noncredit courses offered for the purposes of professional and personal development are an important realization of
Off-Campus Program’s objective to sustain lifelong learning. Annual giving provides the opportunity for all supporters of
Off-Campus Programs to have a significant impact on its future success during this exciting campaign.
Off-Campus Programs
The
case for support
CMU offers one of the nation’s most
extensive and reputable programs for off-campus studies. Since it
began meeting the extended learning needs of career professionals in
1971, Off-Campus Programs, formerly the College of Extended
Learning, have graduated more than 55,000 students. Off-Campus
Programs currently
offer classes to more than 8,000 students at more than 60 education
sites throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
This
innovative college most recently pioneered development of the first
online doctoral programs in the nation, making it possible for
students at a variety of locations to earn bachelor’s and doctoral
degrees in both audiology and health administration. Off-Campus
Programs are at the
center of CMU’s commitment to maintain and strengthen its status
as a doctoral research-intensive university.
Off-Campus
Programs
offer more than 2,100 courses. Degrees include five at the
bachelor’s level, seven at the master’s level, and two at the
doctoral level. CMU's Off-Campus Programs are applauded often for forward-looking offerings in areas from administration and education to
community development and information technology. For example, the
vehicle design program, which is heralded as the only one of its
kind in the nation, provides the automotive industry with highly
skilled designers who are prepared to compete in today’s global
economy.
Education
for working adults is integral to the mission of Off-Campus Programs. Educational
centers are located inside corporations, medical centers, learning
institutions, and at 22 military bases in 13 states and at the
Pentagon in Washington, D.C. CEL’s present and past corporate
affiliations include DaimlerChrysler, Chevrolet, Amway, Blue
Cross/Blue Shield, Whirlpool, and DELMIA (a Dassault Systems
company).
Alumni
success stories are numerous. Off-Campus Programs are proud to count among its
graduates a physician who received a humanitarian award for his
international work with land mine victims; a Fortune 500 company
vice president who earned both her bachelor’s and master’s
degrees through Off-Campus Programs; and an audiology graduate who was interviewed
on CNN for her expertise in the field.

“The
program at CMU absolutely prepared me for this job. The

thought of going back to school after 20 years was a little
intimidating. I set up an appointment with the CMU center, and
