Our bold new vision

Central Michigan University’s vigorous and innovative community of scholars, students, and partners shares unparalleled enthusiasm and determination to realize a new vision of excellence during the first comprehensive capital campaign in CMU history.

This multimillion dollar campaign will provide important benefits to CMU students, athletes, faculty, coaches, fans, and many others at this definitive juncture in CMU’s development as a teaching and research institution.

The $11 million venture for CMU Athletics will strengthen CMU’s already exceptional Division IA programs while also advancing vital broader campaign initiatives to:

  • Establish student scholarships and heighten academic standards
  • Provide endowments for faculty research and creativity
  • Enhance the campus environment with advanced facilities and technology
  • Strengthen ongoing and special programs

Your generous support in any of these areas – student awards, applied faculty engagement, or modern learning and athletic resources – will ensure that CMU’s New Vision of Excellence extends far into the future.

The campaign for CMU Athletics

The Campaign for Central Michigan University presents opportunities throughout the university, including initiatives to realize the immense potential in CMU’s Division IA athletic programs.

CMU will construct a new Events Center and provide ongoing support for a variety of emerging needs.

Join us as we, together, fulfill A New Vision of Excellence for CMU Athletics.

Campaign goal $11 million
Events Center $8 million
Ongoing support $3 million

Enhance Campus Environment – $8 million

A new Events Center will serve a multitude of purposes – from concerts to commencement, community exhibits, high school basketball tournaments, and CMU athletic events.

This high-priority facility will be pragmatic and functional, yet beautiful. It will become no less than an integral central rallying place for an institution that already encourages fond human attachment among alumni and friends. CMU currently has no large indoor facility for events, gatherings, and fulfillment of the university’s tremendous and growing athletic potential.

For CMU Athletics, the center will become the cornerstone of an improved Division IA basketball program, which in 2003 achieved CMU’s first-ever men’s first-round NCAA tournament victory.

CMU’s basketball program currently is housed in the Daniel P. Rose Center. Rose originally was designed as a teaching facility and was built prior to Title IX legislation, which considerably expanded athletic opportunities for women and generated a need for additional athletic training and competition facilities.
Opportunities for special support will be available to enable the university to fully develop and equip the Events Center to serve the needs of a diverse population of students, athletes, and the Central Michigan University community. The Events Center will become one of the most visible signs of CMU’s commitment to a multitude of activities.

Ongoing and Special Programs – $3 million

In today’s competitive college sports arena, it takes more than good athletes and aggressive recruitment to build a strong program. Annual giving through the Chippewa Club continues CMU’s tradition of academic and athletic excellence. Annual support enhances our athletic programs and helps CMU remain competitive at the Division IA level.

Generous annual gifts help build first-class athletic facilities, employ visionary leaders and coaches, and develop a large team of advisors to help student-athletes achieve a first-rate education and athletic success.
To remain competitive, CMU also must offer student-athletes additional support.

Central Michigan University was awarded full NCAA Division IA status in the 1970s. To maintain this distinguished position, the Department of Athletics is committed to offering financial aid to more than 320 outstanding student-athletes.

An increased investment in the Department of Athletics’ endowment program will assist in attracting quality student-athletes to CMU and enhance the goal to remain a Division IA university.

Our Case for Support

The Campaign for Central Michigan University will empower CMU and CMU Athletics to fully achieve A New Vision of Excellence.

As a member of the Mid-American Conference, Central Michigan University and its Department of Athletics have attained elite status as a Division IA institution. The MAC is one of only 11 conferences throughout the nation with an NCAA Division IA classification.

Athletic success builds visibility, spirit, and pride and enhances the image of the university for all to see. CMU’s athletic success also aids in recruiting students and increasing the interest of the university community, alumni, and friends.

The Department of Athletics sponsors 16 varsity teams with more than 450 student-athletes participating. CMU teams, comprised of seven men’s and nine women’s sports, have achieved impressive accomplishments for the university.

• A track record of success. Since joining the Mid-American Conference in 1972, CMU athletic teams have captured 53 league championships – baseball (10), softball (10), gymnastics (8), wrestling (5), men’s basketball (5), men’s cross country (5), football (4), women’s basketball (2), women’s cross country (2), women’s indoor track (1), and field hockey (1).

• Excellence in Academics. For six of the past seven years – including 2003 – CMU student-athletes have captured the Mid-American Conference Academic Achievement Award. This award is given to the MAC school with the highest grade point average among its student-athletes. Chippewa student-athletes competing for this year’s MAC Academic Achievement Award earned a 3.10 cumulative grade point average. Recent CMU Athletics honors include the 2001 Athletics Director’s CHAMPS Program Excellence Award and the 2001 MAC Reese Trophy for men’s teams accomplishments.
