Faculty
and Program Endowment - $4 million
CMU’s reputation rests primarily with professors who share a commitment to teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level and who engage in applied research and creative activity that completes students’ learning experiences.
Outstanding Faculty
To build upon its strong tradition of faculty-student collaboration, CMU must attract and retain faculty members who are committed to applied research and creativity in a student-focused environment and who are at the forefront of their disciplines. CMU’s success as a premier learner-centered institution with a competitive advantage in faculty development will require supporting:
- Endowed faculty positions
- Research, scholarship, and creative activity awards
- Visiting
artists, scholars, scientists, and other professionals
- New collaborative applied research and community service centers
Endowed faculty chairs and professorships are envisioned as the crucial tools to recruit and retain the top academic leaders who will help drive CMU’s new agenda for applied research and scholarship.
With only one endowed faculty chair, CMU currently ranks at the bottom among
Mid-American Conference universities such as Ohio University, which has more than 70 endowed positions.
In addition to funding faculty chairs, income from faculty endowments may be used to enhance faculty members’ teaching skills, supplement faculty salaries, support faculty research activities, and provide faculty members with release time to create new courses and write textbooks.
